Clean Sweep of Defending Champs Positions Cougar Squads for Title Run

A sweep of all four divisions against the defending DFAL champions of Las Lomas was reason enough for celebration at Wednesday's penultimate regular season competition; some impressive individual efforts, along with a new level of teamwork made the victories that much sweeter.

With the meet drawing to a close, dozens of Cougar teammates lined the fence to support their 1600 Relays as season best splits from Emily Brennan (10) and Ketti Salemme (09) propelled the squad to their fastest time of 2009. Earlier highlights for the varsity girls included Meghan Nelson's (11) runner up finishes in both hurdle races and an emphatic sweep of the 800m by Brennan, Olivia Warren (10) and Grace Orders (11).

Jake Cucarola (12) followed up wins in the 100m and 200m with a new PR of 57.3 to anchor the frosh soph boys' 1600 Relay, wrapping up the day's most lopsided scoring as the Cougars crushed the Knights by 88 points. Also crucial were first place performances from Junggi Min (11) in the 800m and Tony Knox (12) in triple jump.

Holding down the fort for a frosh soph girls' team depleted by some key varsity promotions, Ruthie Shapiro (11) tore through her four events with victories in the 100 Hurdles, 300 Hurdles, high jump and triple jump, amassing 20 points for her squad, while Rachel Faoro (11) covered two and a half miles of racing on the track in addition to finishing second in the discus!

The narrowest margin of victory came in the varsity boys' division as a squad limited by illness and injury clawed its way to a nearly knotted score heading into the day's final race. Gutsy hurdle running from Michael Zhang (10), an unexpected PR discus toss by Steven Maurer (10), and Andres DelValle's pole vault contribution helped narrow the point gap.

Nate Cox (09) began the final push to victory with an impressive 9:48.8 finish in the 3200m to lead a sweep of the event before the 1600 Relay squad of Zhang, Patrick Trotter (10), Ross Geiger (09) and Jared Wong (09) finished off the win.

With one final regular season league meet left, all four Cougar teams remain in the hunt for DFAL titles!
