Williams, Powell Earn Triple Crowns as Girls Stay Perfect; Heutmaker Trims Time, Holds off Dublin for League Title
With a few inches missing from his iconic head of hair, and a set of new spikes, Thomas Heutmaker (16) became a critical contributor for his squad at Tuesday's frosh soph league championships in Dublin.
The sophomore veteran first topped his teammates in the 110 hurdles, earning 6 points for a 3rd place finish. Then Heutmaker improved in the 300 hurdles, stealing a point in 6th place. Finally, with the league title on the line, he battled through the anchor leg of the 1600 relay after receiving the baton with a 20 meter lead.
With his team lining the rail screaming encouragement, Heutmaker, who had never previously dropped under 60 seconds for 400m, fought his way to a 57.8 split, and a 2nd place finish, one spot ahead of Dublin.
The result forged a tie with the Gaels for the championships meet title, and ensured an outright league crown for 2014. Las Lomas, the only team to best the Cougars during the regular season, finished in 4th place at the meet.
Jason Lin (17) soared over 5-7 to win the boys' high jump, and Evan Amsden (16) launched himself to an 11 foot clearance, topping the pole vault field.
Lauren Williams (17) was one of several stars in the girls' competition. In just her first season, the talented freshman exploded for a 4 foot improvement in the triple jump, out distancing her teammate and runner-up Ana Bernardo (17) by over 3 feet.
Williams also won the long jump and 200m with new personal bests.
Robin Powell (16) turned her hat trick in the distance events, winning the 800m, 1600m and 3200m. Powell also placed 4th in the high jump.
Jaime Brown (17) equalled her best mark to win the high jump, and then added a second league title in the discus.
The girls squad racked up 193 points, 90 points ahead of second place Las Lomas.
