Finnane Leads Girls to 2nd Place at State; Boys' Team Continues Top-Ten Streak

Continuing her improbable march up the school record board, Toni Finnane (15) finished on the heels of Las Lomas' Chloe Hansel at Saturday's state championships to post the 2nd fastest time ever run by a Campolindo athlete on the Woodward Park course.

Finnane's runner-up finish was 7th best on the day, and helped her squad hold on to a podium spot as key teammates struggled.

With an aggressive start, Campolindo held a team scoring advantage over the field at both the mile and 2-mile splits.

Unfortunately, Brighie Leach (15) and Jenna Miles (18), who had been 2nd and 4th respectively for the Cougars at the NCS championships, encountered serious challenges as they passed the 2-mile mark. Leach, who was among the lead pack through that point, experienced breathing difficulties that caused her to drastically slow her pace. Moments later, Miles encountered asthma symptoms that forced her to abandon the race.

Mary Orders (15), with a career best performance, took over the #2 position in the final mile, and battled valiantly to an 11th place finish.

4-year state meet veteran Rachel Johnson (15) rallied to finish 3rd for the team with Han Sun (16) following just 2 places back. Sarah Cella (16) completed the scoring in 42nd place.

Courageously, Leach, staggering and disoriented, finished 84th.

Remarkably, in spite of their struggles, the team held on for 2nd place, just 10 points back of Palos Verdes. In a merge of all 5 divisions the girls still ranked 7th overall.

It is the squad's 11th podium appearance, a total that ranks 3rd all-time in California state meet history.

The boys' team added another year to their state meet streak as they grabbed 9th place, one spot ahead of Bishop O'Dowd. It is the 11th consecutive year the boys have finished the season among the state's top 10 division 3 schools.

Parker Lothamer (15) repeated his top-gun performance of the previous week to improve his course mark by 7 seconds. Also improving was Jonathan Semenza (16), who finished 2nd for the Cougars.
