Exchange Student Shows off Nordic Skill, Wins Annual Orienteering Championships

The sport of orienteering, unknown to many Americans, is a popular pass time in Scandinavia. Exchange student Petra Nord (17), who has participated in the sport in her home country of Sweden, demonstrated as much by outmaneuvering her opponents at Saturday's annual challenge in Hidden Valley Park.

The senior "rookie" was the top female finisher, making up her stagger and hitting all 12 check points in just under an hour.

The top performance of the day was registered by Max Essl (19). The veteran caught and passed nearly 60 athletes who had started ahead of him, some by as much as 20 minutes.
