Relay Records Fall Friday at Arcadia; Swanson Sails 17 Feet in Long Jump

With three consistent legs, averaging just under 4:30, the boys handed off their record hopes to Thomas Joyce (12), who clicked off a 3:18 for 1200m before closing in 60 to help take four seconds off the previous Campolindo best in the 4x1600m Relay.

The girls' squad followed with a record run of their own. Leading off in 5:10.4, Juliet Farnan (12) put her squad in contention. Finishing third in 20:37.55, they crushed the previous school record by 15 seconds

Meanwhile, Hadley Swanson (13) advanced to the final round of the long jump, putting together a series that included four attempts over 17 feet.

Joyce Nears 9 Minute Mark in Arcadia 3200m; Verdon Finishes 5th in 10:24; Girls' DMR Climbs Record Board

Capping a solid day of performances, including a 5-3 clearance by Hadley Swanson (13) in the open section of high jump, and a fine 12:33 clocking by the girls' distance medley relay, which featured an outstanding anchor leg from Mary Orders (15), Thomas Joyce (12) used perfect weather conditions and a quality field to turn in one of the greatest track & field performances in school history.

The 9:03.23 finish for eight laps around the oval makes Joyce the top 3200m runner in Northern California and 5th in the state.

The race was not without challenge, as Joyce battled a schizophrenic pace, opening in 64, then dropping to 74 before settling into 68's through the 2k mark. After 69's for laps six and seven, the spindly scrapper closed in 63.

Showing impressive mid-season form, Carrie Verdon (12) started conservatively, then moved up through the pack of the girls' invitational 3200m to finish 5th in 10:24.72. The mark is the second fastest of her career and tops the North Coast Section.

Earlier in the day, Swanson made first attempt clearances of 4-11 and 5-1. After her 3rd attempt clearance of 5-3, the junior helped keep the girls' DMR in contention with a 59 second 400m split. Orders anchored the team with a 5:13.5 clocking for 1600m to help the squad climb to the 4th spot on the school record board.
