Approaching the mile mark in Saturday's Division III NCS Championship showdown between the Cougars and top ranked Maria Carrillo, Catherine Murillo (07) and Laurie Finnegan (08) were matched stride for stride by the Pumas' front running duo of Kristen Sanzari and Leanne Fogg. The four had already separated from the field in what was expected to be the most competitive race on the day.
Apparently, no one told Murillo.
With a sudden surge by the senior veteran, along with a corresponding response from Finnegan, the girls in blue turned the screws through the middle mile. The gutsy move rattled the resolve of their competitors, and opened the door for the upset.
Top 20 finishes by Lisa Rosenthal (09) and Riki Giacchetti (07), as well as a determined effort from Christine Pulford sealed the win, and propelled the varsity girls to their first section title since 2002.
Chris Harland-Dunaway (07) and Joey Kochlacs (07) finished fifth and sixth respectively to lead the varsity boys to another state championship berth.
In the deepest boys' field of the meet, Robert Pulford (09) summoned his best performance of the season to crack the top 20 and help close the gap on DFAL rival Acalanes to a mere six points!
