Leach Cracks 18 Minutes at Woodward In unseasonably warm conditions, Brighie Leach (15) built a one minute advantage over 2nd place by the time she cross the finish line at Friday's Roughrider Invitational, held on the Woodward Park 3.1 mile course. Her winning time of 17:54 is 3rd on the Campolindo All-Time list, behind Carrie Verdon and Grace Orders, who achieved their marks at the 2010 state championships, helping the Cougars win the team title. Leach's solo effort at Friday's "low-key" affair suggests her current #3 state ranking may be a bit conservative. The rest of the girls' varsity squad also helped make a case for themselves as the top division 3 team in the land, as Mary Orders (15) closed the gap on Rachel Johnson (15). Johnson held down the #2 position for the squad, finishing 4th in 19:03, while Orders rolled to 8th place in 19:20. Hana Sun (16) and Sarah Cella (16) both came through under 20 minutes to wrap up the scoring. Sun's performance was a 1:28 improvement over her race from a year ago. Sarah Shipway (16) also improved over her 2013 Roughrider mark, setting a new 3.1 mile career best of 20:53. The varsity girls' 39 point team total was a healthy 47 points ahead of runners-up Bishop Amat, another state ranked program. Inspired by a mid-season surge from Claire Cimino (17), the frosh soph girls' also earned a meet title in Fresno. Cimino finished the 2.1 mile course in 14:44. Sophia Settle (16), Amalia Riegelhuth (17), Erika Riepe (17), and Liz Timmons (16) all moved into the top 20 by the finish, securing a 12 point advantage over 2nd place McFarland. Also in the frosh soph girls' race, Natasha McCullough (16) crushed her previous course best by over a minute. Boys' team highlights included an improvement from Nathaniel Sauerberg (16), who picked up the #3 spot for the squad by finishing in just under 17 minutes for the 3.1 mile course. Ben Weinberg (14) registered a 25 second improvement over his previous Woodward best, finishing in 4th place overall.
