FS Girls, JV Boys Tally Perfect Scores at Final Regular Season Meet; D'Iorio's Late Surge Saves JV Girls' Undefeated Season

As they have done all season, the frosh soph girls set the tone at Wednesday's final regular season competition by grabbing the top 5, and 7 of the top 8, finishing places against the rest of the league on the short and fast Newhall Park course in the 1st race of the meet.

Syndey Roberts (21) shot to the front of the race from the gun, leading a string of blue and white jerseys. Catherine Zhang (20) moved up several places to catch Roberts in the final mile. The duo battled through the final stretch, finishing within 2 tenths of second from one another, Roberts 1st and Zhang 2nd.

Equally dominant, the junior varsity boys' top 5 were never challenged in their contest. After running with the Cougar's lead pack for most of the race, Jeremy Ahn (18) pulled ahead over the closing 400 meters to take the victory. Teammates Max Essl (19), Colin Lekki (19), Charlie Woidat (19) and Casey Chambers (18) all finished within 20 seconds of their leader. The next best league competitor was 20 seconds back.

Perhaps most exciting for the JV boys was the resurgence of Woidat, who returned from injury to regain his scoring status. In fact, Woidat was fastest on the squad through the 2nd mile of the race.

The Cougars overcame their biggest challenge in the junior varsity girls' race. After an uncharacteristically poor start, which put the undefeated squad in the position of playing catchup behind aggressive packs from Northgate and College Park, Amy Flett (20) and Kiana Lew (18) responded just in time to pick off critical places.

While Chloe Guthrie (19) ran away with the individual victory, her junior varsity teammates managed to turn the tide against the inspired Broncos and Falcons. Most impressive in the late-race turnaround was Kira D'Iorio (19), who stormed passed several key scorers in the final stages to preserve her team's perfect record.

The frosh soph boys also earned a come-from-behind win. While Sam Morasch (20) and Pablo Nguyen (20) took to the front early, Owen Lekki (21), Arik Nashan (21) and Evan Yabu (21) made up ground late in order to fend off challenges from Clayton Valley and College Park.

Isabella Chao (18) and Edward Buckley (17) continued their late season rise with individual varsity wins. Chao ran unchallenged wire-to-wire in the varsity girls' race while Buckley produced a surge in the middle mile of the varsity boys' race that caused his rivals to whither away.

The varsity girls were further buoyed by the 3-mile debut of Emma Overell (18), who took over the #2 position on the squad, finishing 8th in 18:42.
