Veterans, Rookies Test Fitness as Early Saturday Morning Offers Break from Heat While rising early on Saturday morning may have been a challenge in itself, the cooler temperatures were a pleasant contrast to the afternoon highs experienced over the previous two days as the Cougars tuned up with races on the Hidden Valley Park 2.0 mile course. Normally split into "rookie" and "veteran" contests, this year the practice meet included just two races, one for girls at 7:40am and one for boys at 8:10am. While Isabella Chao (18) was credited with the win, she was accompanied by teammates Hannah Ruane (18) and Jenna Miles (18) for the duration of the race. The trio looked relaxed and comfortable as they crossed the finish line simultaneously in a time of 12:59. All three athletes have run faster on the course in the past. Jessie Foxworthy (18) showed what a summer of increased mileage can do, knocking a whopping 40 seconds off her time from a year ago to finish 4th, just ahead of Paloma Hancock (20) in 5th. Also revealing a new level of fitness was Ellie Guthrie (20), who ran an impressive 13:55 to finish 6th. The time is just seconds off her course best from last year's DAL championship meet and an impressive 2 minutes and 26 seconds faster than her performance in the 2016 practice meet. Rounding out the solid racing by veterans was Adithi Subramaniam's (19) clocking at 15:16, which bettered her race time from a year ago by 1 minute and 44 seconds. The top rookie girl finisher was senior Liv Lagomarsino (18), who used sound pacing to finish 10th in 15:13. Jessica Rosiak (21) earned the best freshman placing at 13th in 15:53. In the wake of a blowout victory for Edward Buckley (19), many of the veteran boys appeared content to run as a pack through the early stages of their race. Eventual runner-up Andrew Tseng (18), along with Thibault Gourlin (18), Owen Hunger (20) and Jeremy Ahn (18) remained in contact for the entire race. Freshman standout Dylan Gunn (21) debuted as the 4th man for the Cougars in a very respectable 11:43, just ahead of Hunger, whose 11:48 finish is an improvement by nearly a minute over last year. Other improvements by a minute or more over last year's race time came from Sam Morasch (20), Dylan Cronin (20), Maximilian Essl (19), and Andres Artale (20). Behind Gunn's top rookie mark, Owen Lekki (21) and Arik Nashan (21) were the next-best freshman harriers, finishing 11th and 13th place, respectively.
