Varsity Boys Survive Rival's Challenge; Cougars Sweep First DAL Center Meet

Wednesday's 1st center meet of the 2023 season, held on the 2 and 3-mile courses at Hidden Valley Park, saw the Campolindo varsity boys hold on to their 14-year undefeated streak in league competition by the narrowest of margins. After a back-and-forth battle, the Cougars posted a 2-point win over a rival Miramonte squad that placed 3 finishers in the top 7.

While Alex Thomasson (24) made his eagerly awaited return by contributing just 2 points in the dual scoring against the Matadors, it was the gritty finishes from Drew Shogan (27), Gavin Gunn (27), and Tyler Ngo (24), to stay ahead of Miramonte's 4th scorer that gave the team the final advantage.

The varsity boys' clean-sweep of the division pushes their historic winning streak to 140.

Leading up to the nail-biting conclusion, the Cougars enjoyed wide margins of victory in the other divisions, including another strong showing from a frosh soph girls' squad that overcame a last-minute lineup change with 1 of its previous top performers being promoted to varsity.

Unfazed, the team dropped a 15-point bomb on the field, led by the rapidly ascending Angele Tseng (27). The freshman jumped to the lead early and never looked back, cross the finish in 13:32, nearly a minute ahead of the nearest non-Campolindo competitor. Kaitlyn Kinsey (27) also made progress by assuming the #4 scoring position and Enya Zheng (27) lowered her best time by 32 seconds.

Nikola Van Pelft (27) topped the frosh soph boys' field, holding off a late charge from Ygnacio Valley's top gun. His team dominated the field with all scorers in the top 8, including Samuel Hearn (27), who used a monstrous move in the later stages of the race to pick off 10 places. Most improved was Urijah Smith (27), who knocked over a minute off his HVP personal best.

The junior varsity divisions featured plenty of veteran poise. Siddharth Iyer (25) guided a train of 6 Campolindo runners into the top 8 in the boys' race while Sloan Pullen (25) was the 1st of 5 to cross the line among the top 6. Charlie Wang (26) took the opportunity to subtract 54 seconds from his previous course record.

Shea Volkmer (24) and Kate Kabenina (24) continued to provide their team with a dynamic duo at the front in the penultimate race of the day. They were backed up by a solid improvement of 14 seconds from Daisy Penney (24).
