DAL
Center Meet #2 RESULTS AT BOTTOM OF PAGE
Anderson Provides Tight Pack Margin as Boys Hold off Matts with Tie-Breaker Win In what amounted to a dual meet face off between the undefeated Cougar harriers and the rapidly improving challengers from Miramonte, the final cross country meet of the 2023 regular season will undoubtedly be remembered for years to come. Campolindo entered Wednesday's varsity boys' competition at Newhall Park with the burden of a 15-year league winning streak on the line. While the rest of the DAL schools essentially surrendered prior to the start of the race, the upstart Matadors signaled their intentions early, surging to the front of the field to match the strong start of their rivals. As competitors crested the park's only ascent, it became clear that the league's top 2 teams would be battling to the finish in a head-to-head match race while the remaining squads assumed the role of a trailing band of spectators. Miramonte's Asher Patel provided his team with a critical low stick, surging away from a chase group of 3, which included 2 of his teammates and Campolindo's Alex Thomasson (24). Meanwhile, the Cougar's Cody De La Cruz (26) dropped back into a lonely gap between the leaders and the cluster of remaining scorers for both teams. In the final 600 meters, Miramonte showed impressive mettle as their #4 and #5 runners attempted to move ahead of Campolindo's Paulo Trento (24) and Clark Gregory (27) to seal their victory. While Thomasson summoned the last ounce of energy in his tired legs to edge the Matador's 2nd and 3rd finishers at the line and avoid a mathematically catastrophic 1-2-3 sweep, the Cougar's pack maintained its advantage down the final stretch. Siddharth Iyer (25) moved into 8th place to help his team counter Miramonte's 6-point trio. Yet a fourth green and grey jersey slipped across the finish just 1 second later. Athletes from both teams staggered out of the finish corral in a state of shock and uncertainty. Recent Alhambra graduate Nolan Searls reported that his unofficial tally had the score tied at 28 (Miramonte 1-3-4-9-11=28; Campolindo 2-5-6-7-8=28), and indeed, the delayed official results proved him correct. Yet, in the event of a tie through each teams top-5 scorers, cross country uses a tie-breaking rule that awards victory to the squad with the next-best finisher. That finisher was Campolindo's Cale Anderson (24), who was, in fact, responsible for adding 1 point to Miramonte's score by virtue of placing ahead of their 5th man and for breaking the tie by out performing their 6th man by 4 finishing places. It was the narrowest margin of victory the varsity boys have experienced during their 15-year undefeated streak, and it sets up what is sure to be an epic league championship showdown! The rest of the Campolindo army ruled over the rest of the league in impressive fashion. In fact, had the other 12 schools put forth an all-star team in each division, the Cougars would still have remained perfect in their league campaign. With another record-setting performance, Shea Volkmer (24) streaked away from her competitors in the varsity girls' 3-mile race to win in record-breaking fashion. The senior broke the tape in 17:33, vaulting to the top of the all-time Newhall Park school record list ahead of Ellie Buckley's (23) 2022 winning time, as well as Campolindo all-time great Carrie Verdon (12), who earned back-to-back individual state championship titles in 2010 and 2011. The biggest improvement for the boys was turned in by Taiyo Chiba (27), who bettered his 2-mile course record by 54 seconds. The greatest gains were turned in by Madeline Sheng-Williams (27). The freshman lowered her 2-mile mark by 1 minute and 43 seconds.
