Volkmer 7th at Footlocker West, Qualifies for National Championships in San Diego

Finishing 7th against the best runners in the 11 western states, Shea Volkmer (24) became just the 3rd runner in Campolindo history to qualify for the Footlocker National Championships, to be held on December 9 in San Diego's Balboa Park

.The Footlocker Western Regional field included athletes from California, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Montana, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Alaska and Hawaii.

Volkmer began her race conservatively before surging after the ascent of the switchback hill beyond the 1-mile mark. As the senior descended passed the Mt. SAC stadium she established herself among a breakaway pack of approximately 9 competitors.

By mid-race, La Jolla's Chiara Dailey had built a significant lead over a chase pack which included Volkmer.

Cresting Reservoir Hill, Volkmer continued to cling to the heels of the chase pack, holding on to 7th place. With the top 10 finishers advancing to the national championships, Volkmer appeared in good shape with 800 meters remaining.

In the final 100 meters, Volkmer held off a challenge from league rival Olivia Williams of Acalanes to claim 7th place and punch her ticket to San Diego.

Volkmer Earns All-American Honors at Footlocker National Championships

Shea Volkmer (24) finished her final high school cross country season as an All-American by competing in the Footlocker National Championships at San Diego's Balboa Park on Saturday, December 9.

The all expenses paid trip began on Thursday morning, checking into the Torrey Pines Hilton Resort in La Jolla as the best runners in the country converged for the ultimate prep cross country showdown.

The San Diego weather was predictably sunny and warm as the competitors arrived at Balboa Park's Morley Field.

Volkmer used another conservative start before moving up in the field during the 2nd-half of the race. After finding herself in 2nd-to-last place at the half-mile mark, the senior veteran stayed poised as she picked off places during the 1st ascent of the main climb on the course.

In the end, Volkmer managed to improve her ranking among her West teammates, finishing as the squad's 5th scorer in 25th place.
