Volkmer Tops Girls' Field at 4:54, Joins 14 Boys Under 5-Minutes in Mania 1600m With a scorching 3rd-lap split of 71 seconds, Shea Volkmer (24) posted the fastest girls' performance in meet history at Wednesday evening's Mid-Season Mania 1600m Invitational hosted in Campolindo's Bob Wilson Stadium. Her 4:54.26 finishing time places the senior in rarified air, joining Brighie Leach (15), Lisa Sandel (80), and Carrie Verdon (11) as the only Cougars to ever break 4:55 for the 4-lap distance. Volkmer also joined 14 of her teammates under the 5-minute barrier at the event. Leading the way was Cody De La Cruz (26), who posted a 49-second improvement over his 2022 performance to finish in 4:28.56. Also impressive was the fact that 4 of the 14 were freshmen, including Gavin Gunn (27) and Drew Shogan (27), who finished in 4:44.63 and 4:45.06, respectively. Among the most improved was Nathan Littell (26). The sophomore lowered his previous best by 35 seconds, breaking the 6-minute mark for the 1st time in his career. Meeran Gill (25) also earned a payoff from a year of training, lowering her own personal record to 6:01.44.
