Girls Claim 20th NCS Title; Gregory Leads Boys to 2nd with Top Freshman Time

In the penultimate race of a wet and muddy North Coast Section championship schedule at Hayward High School, Clark Gregory (27) continued his improbably climb into the elite ranks of a sport he only picked up a handful of months prior. In fact, Gregory's 3rd-place individual finish played a huge part in keeping his squad in contention in the team scoring and was the top time turned in by a freshman across all 5 divisions.

With the plucky newcomer assuming the front running for the Cougars, and another clutch improvement from Cale Anderson (24), who finished 16th overall as the 3rd scorer for his team, along with the return of Paulo Trento (24) to the lineup, the boys managed to stay competitive through the end. Ultimately finishing a close 2nd to an inspired Tamalpais squad, they continued an NCS banner streak that dates back to 2013.

For most, simply finishing the race was an achievement as the course was considerably chewed up by the preceding 8 races following 24 hours of intermittent rain. Many of the grass portions had been turned to mush and several corners, as well as both the ascents and descents, were so slick that taking at least 1 tumble was the norm.

Campolindo's day began with another section-best effort from the varsity girls as they posted the fastest team time and earned their 10th-straight section title, staying tied with University High School for the most NCS wins in history. Once again, Shea Volkmer (24) turned in a spectacular race, finishing runner-up behind 2-time defending state champion Hanne Thomsen of Montgomery. Volkmer's 17:29 was 2nd fastest across all races on the day.

With Kate Kabenina (24), Daisy Penney (24), and Sloan Pullen (25) also among the top 10, the Cougars' advantage over the rest of the D3 field was significant.

Turning in her season-best performance, Anya Houston (26) wrapped up the scoring for her squad in 21st place.
