De La Cruz Races to Huge PR, Helps Boys Finish 3rd at Rough Rider; Girls Win Again

Helping the varsity boys to their best team performance of the season, Cody De La Cruz (26) managed to beat his previous course record by nearly 3 minutes as the Cougars finished 3rd in the large-school division of the Rough Rider Invitational hosted by Lincoln High School in Fresno's Woodward Park.

The Friday-afternoon competition is used annually as a state meet "dress rehearsal" for Campolindo's top athletes. This year's edition featured another win for the varsity girls, who managed to edge out Division 2 state podium contender Whitney of Rocklin by 7 points.

Shea Volkmer (24) was the tip of the spear once again, claiming the individual win with a 17:49 clocking that now ranks her 5th all-time in school history. Other notable contributors to the girls' impressive showing included an improvement from Kate Kabenina (24). The senior also moved up the record list with a sub-19 minute finish.

The greatest drop in time for the girls was turned in by Colbie Freese (26) as the sophomore shaved 2 minutes and 29 seconds from her 2022 effort.

While De La Cruz topped all improvements on the day, Nolan Henwood (25) was nearly as successful, lowering his 5k mark by 2 minutes and 44 seconds.

The boys' squad benefitted from a narrow pack margin as Cale Anderson (24) finished the scoring in 47th place at 16:43, just 42 seconds behind the Cougars ace, Alex Thomasson (24), who crossed the line in 14th place.

The pack performance was enough to stay ahead of league rival Miramonte in the team scoring for yet another week.
