Frosh Soph Boys Join Girls atop Podium; Cougars Host Spectacular Season Kickoff

The 38th edition of the Ed Sias Invitational, hosted by Campolindo on the historic Hidden Valley Park 2-mile course, featured warm temperatures and huge fields as the Cougars paraded their new talent.

With dominant victories in the girls' and boy's frosh soph limited divisions, the future appears bright for the small-school program.

A 25-second improvement from freshman Clark Gregory (27) sparked an impressive pack-performance from the frosh soph boys' squad. The gap between the Cougar's 1st finisher Drew Shogan (27) and final scorer Nikola Van Delft (27) was a mere 32 seconds. With all 5 scorers among the top 20, they held off challenges from large-school juggernauts Dublin and De La Salle.

Success continued for Campolindo in the frosh soph girls' division, where Nora Lawrence (27) and Angele Tseng (27) each improved over their previous week's time by 35 seconds to assume the 3rd and 4th scoring position for their squad, respectively. The pair joined the Cougar's front-running duo of Kiona McCasland (27) and Amalia Contreras (27), as well as 5th scorer Libby Wong (26) as New Balance prize winners. And their winning total of 29 points was lowest for a championship team in any of the 9 scored races.

The final 2023 Ed Sias Invite team title was claimed by the varsity girls, who relied on a veteran heavy lineup to keep their section rivals of Maria Carrillo at bay. Kate Kabenina (24) was most improved, lowering her course record by 14 seconds, while Shea Volkmer (24) climbed up the all-time meet record list with her winning time of 11:51.

Other meet highlights included an astonishing 2 minute and 38 second improvement from Madeline Sheng-Williams (27) in the FS/JV overflow race and a new PR for Paulo Trento (24), who accepted the role of top gun for the varsity boys. Kaitlyn Kinsey (27) also shined with a runner-up performance in the junior varsity girls' competition, lowering her mark for 2 miles by 88 seconds.
