Clark Leads Boys to 3rd State Title with School-Record Finish; Lechner's Huge Leap Helps Girls Extend Top-10 Streak

With overcast skies and temperatures in the 40s, it was a historic day on the Woodward Park 5k course at the California state cross country championships. Jaw-dropping performances were turned in by top individuals and teams in almost every division on Saturday, including in the 2nd race of the day, which featured a stellar sub-15 minute effort from Clark Gregory (27), who battled with the lead pack of 5 down the homestretch. The junior's 4th-place finish in 14:57 shaves 4 seconds off the previous school record set by back-to-back individual state champion Aidan Goltra in 2013.

The front running from Gregory along with the 11th-place finish of teammate Nikola Van Delft (27) were the individual highlights for a team that handily claimed its 2nd-consecutive Division 3 team title. The state victory is the 3rd for the boys' squad and 10th overall for the school, moving Campolindo into rarefied company as one of the most successful cross country programs in California history.

This year's achievement was easily the most dominant for the boys, with all 5 of the Cougars' scorers dropping under the 16-minute mark, including Caden Ehrhorn (28), Jack Durden (27), and Samuel Hearn (27) clocking 15:39, 15:43, and 15:46, respectively. The deep roster kept the rest of the field at bay as the squad held its advantage in the team standings wire to wire. The final score of 96 points is 3rd lowest in division history.

In the girls' race, outstanding conditions also helped propel the Cougars to their collective season peak as 4 of 5 scorers broke the 19-minute mark. Both Sophie Lechner (27) and Claire Andrzejek (26) turned in the finest performances of their careers in the clutch, with the former lowering her 5k PR by an astonishing 98 seconds and the latter chopping 66 seconds from her previous best. Both were vital to Campolindo earning its 28th top-10 finish of the last 29 years.

Other highlights in the girls' competition included a 14-second improvement for Jillian Randolph (28) and 1st-time sub-20 minute finish for Mykenzie Fung (28).
