Varsity Girls Defeat Northgate to Earn 12th Consecutive League Championship

After falling to the Broncos in each of the regular-season DAL center meets, the varsity girls finally found their stride as they placed 5 scorers in the top 11 to beat their latest rivals by 11 points, 33 to 44, at Saturday's league championships held in Hidden Valley Park.

Led by a 46-second course PR from Amalia Contreras (27), who challenged for the individual victory through the final mile, Campolindo produced its best team-time performance on the course in 2 years. The result now has the squad positioned to avenge last year's NCS result, which saw Northgate snap the Cougar's 10-year section title streak. Saturday's team crown is the 12th consecutive for the Cougars.

Most remarkable for this year's squad has been the recent rise of junior Sophie Lechner (27), who has turned in new personal bests in each of her last 3 races, including on Saturday when she dropped an astonishing 1 minute and 52 seconds from her HVP 3-mile best of just 5 weeks ago. The effort catapulted her into 5th place as the team's 2nd finisher, just ahead of teammate Jillian Randolph (28) in 6th. With Kiona McCasland (27) finishing 9th and Claire Andrzejek (26) crossing the line in 11th, the quintet gave Campolindo 5 scorers ahead of Northgate's 3rd to complete the comeback.

Meanwhile, the varsity boys continued their dominance over the rest of the league with a score of just 18 points, 57 points ahead of their nearest challenger. From the start, all 9 Campolindo competitors were clustered at the head of the race along with Miramonte's Logan Letulle and College Park's Grayson Langford. Eventually, Langford fell out of the lead group and only Letulle prevented an unprecedented perfect score.

Clark Gregory (27) and Jack Durden (27) took the tape side-by-side while Taiyo Chiba (27) scored for the squad for the 1st time with a 4th-place finish, improving by 22 seconds on the course. The team win is the 17th straight DAL championship for the varsity boys, dating back to 2007.

The day began with impressive individual and team victories in each of the frosh soph races. Mykenzie Fung (28) defended her individual title in the girls' race with a new 2-mile best of 13:31 while her squad posted a low score of 33. Shriya Lind (28) was the 5th finisher in a whopping 1 minute and 41 second PR of 14:48.

The frosh soph boys were given a low stick from Rafael Van Delft (29), who captured his first individual league crown. Austin Sung (29), Thomas Riley (29), Jonah Thompson (28), and Jonah Char (28) finished within 10 seconds of each other to claim 4 of the next 6 finishing positions. Justin Rehfeld (29) lowered his previous HVP best by 40 seconds to finish 18th overall.

The junior varsity competition was a paragon of contrast as the boys' shellacked the league for the 17th consecutive year while the girls fell to Las Lomas by a single point after valiantly battling to their best performance of the year. Keira De Los Santos (27) was a big factor for her squad with a 14-second course best.

Another individual win was notched by Drew Shogan (27), who turned in the fastest junior varsity winning time in course history at 10:32. Peter Shephard's 3rd-place finish in 11:21 was a 43-second improvement.
