Boys Navigate Muddy Hayward Course to Top NCS; Girls Fall again to Northgate

While conditions where nothing like the impossible circumstances of the previous year, where one could hardly call it running, but rather mud ballet, the Hayward High School trails were far from ideal as rain over the preceding week made for sloppy footing across most of the grass areas that make up the majority of the 3.0 mile NCS Championship course.

In spite of the blue skies on race day, the Campolindo boys suffered through an ugly outing to claim the D3 crown and earn the top team time across all divisions. Clark Gregory (27) formed the tip of the spear, running away from his nearest rivals over the 2nd and 3rd miles. His finishing mark of 15:14 would stand up as the top individual time on the date.

Behind the Cougar's streaking leader was a remaining scoring 4 that finished with a margin of just 6 seconds. Jack Durden (27) again turned in the #2 stick in 7th place. The junior was followed closely by Caden Ehrhorn (28), Gavin Gunn (27), and Samuel Hearn (27), in 8th, 10th, and 11th place, respectively.

It may not have been one of the squad's prettiest performances of the year, but it more than got the job done with a 74-point margin of victory over 2nd place Northgate, which had its best result of the year.

The Campo varsity boys' now advance to the state meet as one of the title contenders.

An hour later, with the course certainly worse for wear, the girls' team faced off yet again with their league rivals. And again, it was the Broncos who upended the Cougars, this time with a strong team effort.

Northgate used a measured approach to overtake the early team leaders. After an ambitious start by several individuals, Campolindo suffered over the final half of the race. Further complicating the matter was an impressive run from Northgate's back-end scorers, who turned what had been a weakness in earlier-season contests, into a substantial advantage.

Up front, Amalia Contreras (27) once again neutralized the Bronco's low stick with a fine 3rd-place finish, but only 1 other teammate was able to displace any of the Bronco's scoring 5.

In spite of their struggles, the girls held on to finish 2nd in the team standings for the 2nd consecutive year, and increase their state meet qualifying streak to 30 consecutive years.
