Smith Rules Event Testing; Distance Trio Chases Down Sprint Contenders to Sweep
It wasn't close.
Emma Smith (20) simply dominated the day, posting solid marks in early events like the 300m sprint and the shot put before tearing away from the field in the 1200m run to earn her title as the best all-around athlete on the Campolindo track & field team at event testing on Saturday, February 22.
Next in line was Emily Hatch (22), who relied on her impressive range on the track to hold off 3rd-place-finisher Namratha Kasalanati (22) for runner-up honors in the veteran girls' division.
In the boys' competition, Joel Kofman (20) and Anish Visht (20) established early leads. Kofman topped the list of performances in the 300m sprint while Visht popped off in the shot put with a toss of 33 feet. With 3 events completed, the duo was trailed in the overall standings by fellow sprint veteran Declan Bhagwat (20). Bhagwat was among the top 5 in the 300m, long jump and shot put.
And then the 1200m run happened.
Bradford Martin (21), who had tied Visht for the lead in the shot put and laid down a respectable time in the 300m sprint, did just enough in the 1200m run to hold off fellow distance runners Owen Lekki (21) and Marco Chao (21) to earn the overall title.
Kofman finished 25th while Bhagwat was 32nd and Visht 40th in the 3-lap affair.
In the rookie girls' competition, Ellie Buckley (23) claimed a 1-point victory over fellow freshman Charlotte Arnswald (23) by virtue of her 4:04.0 effort in the final event. Anna Wilson (23) made it a freshman sweep finishing 3rd.
Alex Lodewick (23) edged out Dylan Mitchley (20) in the rookie boys' division, while Taj Smith-Vuong (22) picked up 3rd place with 56 points.

Seniors Reflect as Spring Season Wraps
Reaching the end of the traditional spring-season track & field schedule, senior members of the Class or 2020 gathered "virtually" with their younger teammates on Thursday evening to give thanks, offer advice and remember special moments from their high school athletic experience.
Recurring themes included the power of community and gaining satisfaction from hard work. Some pointed to the program's role in developing character traits like patience and perseverance, attributes that have been critical for athletes during the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.
Of the 18 senior members of the 2020 Campolindo track & field squad, 12 are 4-year participants: Declan Bhagwat, Dylan Cronin, Ellie Guthrie, Paloma Hancock, Cayden Hein, Alicia Hober, Mason Januszewski, Lily Matranga, Sam Morasch, Sarah Naughten, Mia Travis, and Anish Visht.
The Campolindo coaching staff is grateful to have had the opportunity to work with these outstanding student-athletes.
